Throughout history, there are people who have lived in much tougher circumstances than us today, dangers pressing in on them on a daily basis.
This could be growing up in extreme poverty, living through chaotic revolutionary periods, being a leader in a time of crisis, suffering personal loss or tragedy, having a brush with death, facing conflict on the battlefield, or leading an army in war.
Countless people who grew up in such circumstances had their spirits crushed by the weight of adversity.
But still a few managed to rise above.
